Did you know that birth marks are considered a birth defect? Granted, they are one of the most harmless birth defects recorded in medical science, but when placed in an unfortunate and highly visible location, the child and later on the adult she or he grows into, will have to suffer as the birth marks blemish skin. Laser treatment might be the answer for many such sufferers and even though physicians are certain that there is no harm associated with the presence of birth marks, they concede that removal for aesthetic reasons is frequently a good idea.
Consider the presence of such marks on the cheeks, forehead, of even neck, and it is not surprising that skin laser treatment centers frequently receive phone calls inquiring about their ability to remove such marks. These blemishes are sometimes only confined to the upper layers of the skin while other times they reach through a large number of layers, making complete removal at a skin laser center all but impossible. Here are some of the most commonly treated marks:
- The port-wine stain is most commonly known for its deep coloration and also the large size associated with it. At the root of this birth mark is a malformation of a vascular system, and by itself the stain will neither fade nor disappear. On the contrary! This is one of the skin blemishes that are known to darken and become more pronounced with age. This is one of the birth marks that may be treated with a skin laser, but is rarely treated at the mall’s skin laser treatment center since successful treatments require the sufferer to undergo the procedures when she or he is still a child. Mall centers will not treat children nor should parents entrust their young to such a facility! Instead, the visit to a pediatric facility that specializes in the treatment of port-wine stains on young children with the help of a laser is the best course of action.
- Stork bites are known to disappear by themselves, but this is not always the case. They are pink and vary in size and location. A skin laser treatment may help to fade the visibility of the stork bite.
- A strawberry mark also disappears but because of its odd appearance – it is bright red and looks like an open wound because of the raised appearance on the skin – it is considered a good candidate for skin laser therapy.
Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that a treatment may actually bring about any results! In other cases it may require a series of treatments before you will see an appreciable change in appearance of these blemishes. This requires not only a deep pocket, but also a thorough understanding of the process as it is easy to become discouraged when the results are slower in coming than perhaps you might have anticipated. Good communication with the physician as well as an acceptance of the limitations of treatment is a must for those undergoing skin laser treatments for birth marks.
